April:
There are these three young siblings that spend their day after school cycling back and forth on their bikes or scooter all day. I noticed that as soon as the days got nice, the three tended to hang out on the corner by my house. All day, they play outside and engage with anyone that walks by. Up and down the street, over and over.
Sometimes when I look outside the window, they’ve splayed their bikes across the lawn of my 80 year old neighbor’s house. They chat with her as she works on her garden. They end up there for a long time, just chatting away all afternoon. It’s the sweetest sight honestly.
That feels like spring to me.
Winter after the holidays does begin to get a little too cocoon-y and hibernation makes me hungry for people as the days get long again. Not in the eating them type of way, obviously, I’m not a bear.
Spring feels like gathering, the gathering of flowers and fruit, but also the gathering of folks. My moving to a shared space, teaching yoga again, and hanging out with friends and family on these beautiful days has also felt very much like spring. It’s been really nice chatting and meeting new folks!
Not only as a goal for the month, but for the season, I am celebrating people. As humans, that’s all we have as allies, so find your folks and chat them up. Meet someone new in your fitness class, reach out to someone you haven’t seen in a while, make a dog park hang, or simply say good morning to a stranger on the street.
I think it’s time to whip out my bike and bother my neighbor, yay spring!
